St. Petersburg/Clearwater is located on the west side of Florida on the Gulf of Mexico and is set on a peninsula with inland waterways on one side and the Gulf on the other. It is an area that encompasses the cities of St Petersburg and Clearwater which work together through the St Petersburg Clearwater Visitor and Convention Bureau (www.floridasbeach.com) to market the destination. Nearby to the south is Tampa and about 100 miles away is Orlando making it very popular with leisure travellers who can combine it with an Orlando vacation. St Petersburg and Clearwater has its own airport and is also served by Tampa and Orlando International airports and further away is Miami International Airport. The area is comprised of 26 communities that have a unique charm, feel and heritage. From the Greek influence in Tarpon Springs to the Scottish heritage of Dunedin, the area boasts a fascinating cultural mix. The major attraction of the area is the 35 miles of white sandy beaches which are set on a series of eight barrier islands acting as a breakwater just off the mainland and most of which are connected by road. The southern most beach is Fort De Soto Island which is designated as a park and was voted number 1 beach in the United States in 2005. Fort De Soto is popular with visitors as it has a number of attractions including nature walks, picnic areas, camping and the opportunity to explore the fort that was built during the Spanish American war. Running north from De Soto island are the beaches of St Petersburg, Treasure Island, Madeira, Redlington, Indian Shores and Clearwater. At the very north is Caladesi Island State Park which is accessed via ferry, boat or kayak and is rated as the number 2 beach in the United States and like Fort De Soto has a range of leisure activities. As well as beaches the area and Florida generally is known for its abundance of championship golf courses the most well known of which is probably Innisbrook which is home to the PGA Tour POD championship. Given the climate there is a full range of other outdoor pursuits including tennis, sailing and scuba diving. For those looking for professional sports the area is home to major league teams in the key sports. The St Petersburg Clearwater destination also has numerous malls and restaurants located in the city centres as well as the beach areas and for those looking for more cultural activities there is the is the world famous Salvador Dali museum and a moving Holocaust exhibition. Another unique attraction is being able to see Turtles hatch. In a typical year, more than 150 loggerhead sea turtles successfully nest on St. Petersburg/Clearwater area beaches. These are one of five species of endangered sea turtles that lay their eggs on Floridas beaches. While the green, leatherback, hawksbill and Kemps Ridley can be found in local waters, the loggerhead is by far the most common. Peak nesting time runs May through August. Overall St Petersburg Clearwater is ideal for family vacations which makes it popular with American as well as international travellers.
