The Observatory has a commanding position on the 52nd floor of the hotel with windows completing this circular shaped restaurant which overlooks the sea, Jumeirah Palm Island and the inshore Marina area. The restaurant flows from one section to another, with a cocktail bar and casual seating arrangements at the entrance, through to a fine dining area and a more secluded dining area. In keeping with the name, there are a number of traditional, brass, 'ships telescopes' which are strangely in keeping with the modern style and décor with its unusual lighting, black linen and wall coverings, and a mixture of cream and red seating. This was the first grass course in the Gulf region when it opened in 1988. The club features two championship courses; the Majlis and the Wadi. The Majlis was the original course and was designed by Florida based designer Karl Litten. The Wadi opened in 1996 and was re-designed in 2007 by Nick Faldo. Despite a number of new courses, it still ranks as one of the best in Dubai. It has hosted the Dubai Desert Classic fifteen times for the last six years in succession.

  Montgomerie Dubai
Description
Covering more than 265 acres of landscaped turf, gardens and lakes, this spectacular golf course provides the player with undulating "links land" style fairways which challenge and intrigue all levels of player. Placement of the drive to the generous fairways remains the cornerstone of any good round. The flat landing area of each fairway can be challenging to find, but a rewarding adventure. With 14 lakes and 81 bunkers, The Montgomerie Dubai, the first and only example of the association between golfing great Colin Montgomerie and Desmond Muirhead, adds a distinctive variety to the golfing landscape of the region.

One of the signature holes is the par 5 fourth, dubbed the Snake hole for its saddleback fairway which doglegs towards the green, with 2 bunkers behind forming the eyes of the snake. Further on, the par 5 ninth, with water down the left, is a tough finish to the opening half. The par 3 thirteenth, a hole designed in the shape of the UAE, boasts a 360 degree teeing area around an island fairway and green, allowing for a completely different golf hole to be played every time. However, it is the par 5 eighteenth that offers a more classic test. At 656 yards it is a monster and, with water protecting the front of the green, it defies even the best player to hit the green in two.

Special Needs
Communal Areas
Guests arriving at the Harbour Hotel and Residence can avoid the five entrance steps by using the indoor valet parking area to the side of the building. At this point of the hotel the lobby leads off to the right and Counter Culture restaurant is found to the left. This Deli styled restaurant has a lift to the side of the ten steps at the entrance to assist guests who may have difficulty climbing stairs. az•u•r restaurant, situated on the 5th floor of the hotel has two shallow well lit steps in two areas of the restaurant with the remaining seating either on the level central area of the restaurant or on the terrace.
Rooms & Bathrooms
The Harbour Hotel and Residence has two specially adapted guest suites with two bedrooms each and a neighbouring buildings view. Both were undergoing refurbishment at the time of writing this report but we are told “the bathrooms have showers with grab rails and a shower seat”.

As they stand, two bedroom suites have wide entrance doorways, separate living room/dining room, large fully fitted kitchen and a master bedroom and additional guest room.
Restaurants & Catering
There are three restaurants within the hotel, all of them, including the Observatory on the 52nd floor have free standing and bench seat furniture. Counter Culture, a deli styled restaurant situated in the lobby/indoor valet parking area of the hotel has a lift to the side of the ten steps at the entrance to assist guests who may have difficulty climbing stairs. az•u•r restaurant, situated on the 5th floor of the hotel has two shallow well lit steps in two areas of the restaurant with the remaining seating either on the level central area of the restaurant or on the terrace. All the restaurants are very adaptable with their food approach, Counter Culture will prepare bespoke dishes and az•u•r uses fresh organic produce whilst the Observatory does not use any additional additives including salt in any of its dishes. Guests should notify the staff of any special dietary requirements at the time of placing orders.
Recreation Facilities
Recreation facilities at the Harbour Hotel and Residence all focus around the 'Health Club' which is situated on the 5th floor of the hotel. All facilities have level access including the gym and pool, the ‘timeless spa’ has good sized treatment rooms with private showers, however, the changing rooms and Jacuzzi area are a little on the compact side.
Visual & Hearing Aids
There are no special facilities available to guest guests who are either visually impaired or hard of hearing. Assistance dogs are welcome within the hotel and guests should notify the hotel at the time of booking.
Cranley Comment
Generally speaking, the public areas within the Harbour Hotel and Residence are wheelchair user friendly. The selection of three restaurants within the hotel offers varied cuisine and all have an adaptable approach. The hotel has its own wheelchair and defibrillator, staff are trained in first aid and will offer assistance as required, although they are not fully trained in certain aspects of care. Assistance dogs for the partially sighted and hard of hearing are welcome.
Environment
Measures
Recycling
Cranley Comment
The Harbour Hotel and Residence has a good recycling policy in place. Paper and cardboards are sent to a mill in Al Quoz, plastics and bottles are sent directly to a company called Eco Plastics who have a large recycling plant. Waste oils from the kitchens are collected by a concern called ‘Clean Earth’ who dispatch cooking oils to the sub-continent which is then used for the preparation of soaps etc. The hotel is keen to find other environmentally friendly methods of saving energy and reducing the use of water.
