The Sir Christopher Wren's House Hotel and Spa is situated in an idyllic position, on the banks of the River Thames, overlooked by the ramparts of Windsor Castle to one side, and Windsor and Eton Bridge and the River Thames to the other. Records show that since 1723 there have been several private owners, while local residents believe that Sir Christopher Wren may have stayed in the house at some stage, and possibly even designed it! Apart from persistent reports of encounters with Sir Christopher’s ghost there is no documentary evidence to prove this. In 1752 the Drawing Room was extended and the magnificent alabaster fireplace, attributed to the work of Sir Thomas Fettiplace, circa 1442, was fitted. It originally opened as a hotel in the late 1920’s. Then, during the 1950’s the owner of the house, Mr James Miers, increased the number of bedrooms to 49 by building a second floor at the rear and an additional wing overlooking the River Thames and Windsor and Eton Bridge. At the same time, Sir Christopher Wren's House was registered a Grade II listed building of historical and architectural interest. More recently, in 1997 over £14 million was invested in upgrades that have preserved all historic features. In 2009 a five hundred thousand pound state-of-the-art conference centre was added. Facilities at the hotel presently include 95 traditional and contemporary bedrooms, suites and apartments, that are located in either the original main building or a further five houses surrounding the hotel. Strok’s Restaurant, bar and riverside terrace area, are situated within the main building and there is a separate gym and spa, banquet and conference rooms, and a conservatory which overlook the River Thames. In line with the national smoking ban Sir Christopher Wrens House Hotel & Spa is a smoke free hotel. This includes all inside areas of the Hotel, Spa, & Strok's restaurant but excludes parts of the terrace.

Location Description
Surrounded and steeped in history the Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel and Spa is ideally located close to Heathrow Airport in the Royal town of Windsor, on the Berkshire side of the banks of the River Thames, overlooking Windsor and Eton Bridge. Leading off from Datchet Road and Thames Avenue, the hotel entrance is found on a cobbled pedestrian walkway, Thames Street, which has vehicle access to limited parking which is solely for hotel guests by prior arrangement. This picturesque walkway leads to the bridge that crosses the river from Windsor to Eton, home to the famous Public School. The hotel is overlooked by the ramparts of Windsor Castle with the entrance to the Royal Windsor Castle and Saint Georges Chapel a short walk away, at the top of the steep end of Thames Street. This street also leads to the High Street and Peascod Street, the famous Guildhall where celebrities and Royals have also been married and the main shopping area of the town. Legoland is situated on the outskirts of Windsor. Both the Windsor and the Royal Ascot Racecourse are only a short distance away. There are two railway stations within Windsor, the closest, Windsor and Eton Riverside is serviced by South West Trains and has a direct link to London Waterloo. Windsor and Eton Royal Central Station which is up the hill on Thames Street, retains many of its original Victorian features and is close to the public castle entrance. This station has a link to Slough, on the main Paddington to Penzance line.

Layout Description
There are six buildings associated with the Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel and Spa. The Reception for the hotel guest rooms and apartments are found in the main house, on the left of Thames Street. As you enter this building, there is a solid wood reception desk situated to the left with a smaller curved Porters/Concierge desk to the right. In keeping with this Grade II listed building it retains many original features, with high ceilings, oak panelling and large sash windows. To the right of the reception area is the Sienna Room with chesterfield leather settees, coffee tables, large fireplace and in one corner a guest computer workstation. To the left of the Reception is the Oak Room, with original oak panelling and fireplace, which can be hired for private dining and meetings. Also on the ground floor there is a 1752’s extension to this building which includes the Drawing Room with large alabaster fireplace, attributed to the work of Sir Thomas Fettiplace, and further meeting rooms. The Martini Bar and Pavilion conservatory are situated at the entrance to Strok’s Restaurant overlooking the River Thames with the Champagne Terrace leading from this. Some of the guest rooms are found in the remaining two upper floors of the main house with further guest bedrooms and suites located in four separate buildings with their own entrances, Riverside House, Bousfield Courtyard, and Nook, are opposite the main house. Gate House, which adjoins the main house, with its own Swan Guest Rooms and the entrance to the Wren’s Spa are located to the right of the main house. There are 5 new state-of-the-art meeting rooms in a dedicated building which has been named the ‘Business Centre’; this is situated to the rear of the main building close to the Wren’s Club & Spa. The majority of the apartments are found at the end of this cobbled section of Thames Street, a short distance from the main house on Datchet Road in a building known as Castle View.

 Reception and Concierge are on hand 24 hours a day, with night staff available between 23:00 – 07:00. During the day they are able to assist guests with restaurant reservations, limousines, car rental, airport transfers, or organising tickets to the theatre, polo matches or the races.

There are no shops within the Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel and Spa itself, however the Hotel sells basic toiletries and the Spa sells ESPA beauty products and travellers range. Surrounding the hotel buildings there are a number of small shops, newsagents and tea shops within Thames Street and across the bridge on the Eton side of the river, there are also a few antique shops and a gentlemen’s outfitter. Within a short walk, leading up the hill towards the castle on Thames Street are some banks and stationary shops. The Victorian Windsor and Eton Royal Central Station, also a tourist attraction, at the top of the hill on Thames Street has a number of boutiques and the main pedestrian shopping area and King Edward Court that leads off from this, has a number of well known chain stores.

The Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel and Spa has 5 categories of guest rooms and suites and additionally some apartments that also benefit from all the hotels facilities. The guest rooms, suites and apartments are all individual in either shape or design and are located within five different buildings within close proximity to the main building. Guest rooms and suites in the main building are numbered from 1 – 58. Generally the rooms and suites to the right hand side of the main building above the restaurant have been recently refurbished in a more modern style but with a traditional twist. The remaining rooms to the left of the building retain a more traditional décor. Riverside guest rooms, numbered 73 – 78 and Bousefield guest rooms numbered 59 – 60 and 400 - 408 are in separate buildings on the opposite side of Thames Street. The décor for both of these guest room buildings is very traditional. Nook Standard and Executive rooms numbed 409 – 416 were extensively refurbished in 2006, and are contemporary in style. They have separate work/desk spaces and modern bathrooms. Standard Swan guest rooms are found in the old Swan Public House and are numbered 81 – 86. These guest rooms have been refurbished but retain original features. Seven of the eight apartments are found in the ‘Castle View Building' on Datchet Road and are numbered 101 - 107 most have views over Datchet Road! There are no mini bars in any of the guest rooms, a limited 24 hour room service menu is available to all buildings. Due to the layout of the Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel & Spa, guest rooms are generally spread over two floors in each building and are all reached by stairs. Groups using the hotel for business or a celebration may appreciate the privacy of being able to take over a section of the hotel.

The views and colour schemes for Standard single, double and triple guest rooms are variable depending on which building they are situated in. The Standard rooms to the left of the Main Building, Riverside and Bousefield are mainly furnished in a traditional style with heavy draped fabrics and dark wood and mahogany freestanding furniture. Bed sizes vary from room to room with one of the Standard guest bedrooms having a four poster bed. The guest rooms to the right of the entrance of the Main Building above the restaurant have been modernised and retain some traditional charm that is complemented by the use of modern beige fabrics for curtains, chairs and bed covers, these rooms also have flat screen televisions. The rooms in the Gate House that are known as Swan Rooms vary in style with one guest room having many original beams and sloping wooden floors. The bathrooms are bright, some having natural day light and most have a bath with shower over it with freestanding basin, a few of the smaller rooms only have a shower. The Standard rooms in Nook were completely refurbished in a contemporary style in 2006, and have separate built in furniture, work space desk, flat screen televisions and modern bathrooms.

There are three Junior Suites at the Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel and Spa. Two are in the Main Building of the hotel with one having a four poster bed. The third is situated in Riverside. The Sir Christopher Wren Room is located at the top of the stairs on the first floor of the Main Building. It has oak panelled walls and deep red soft furnishings and fabrics with large traditional desk, seating area and flat screen television, the modern beamed bathroom has a separate shower and Jacuzzi bath. The remaining Junior Suites are decorated in a traditional style with heavy curtains, freestanding mahogany and dark wood furniture with comfortable seating areas and traditional desks. There are two Suites at the Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa. The one in the Main Building has a large separate living room with settee, occasional chairs and low level coffee table. This suite is decorated in a traditional style in tones of gold, light greens and yellows. The master bedroom has a dressing area with double closets, a dressing table and chaise longue. The large bathroom has natural light and two freestanding basin units. The Bousefield Suite is reached by an external staircase from the courtyard area of this building. The separate living room and bedroom have both open brickwork and beams creating a warm feature and ambiance to these rooms, which are complemented by a range of freestanding furniture and dark red soft furnishings. The central bathroom has plenty of daylight from the large overhead skylight, bath and freestanding basin unit.

Seven of the apartments are situated in the 'Castle View Building' on Datchet Road and are known as Datchet Apartments as the views of the castle are limited. These studio style apartments have their own separate intercom system, kitchenette with microwave and dishwasher, and are decorated with traditional furniture with soft furnishings in reds and gold. The Bousefield Apartment is reached by an external staircase from the courtyard area of the Bousefield Building and has a separate kitchen, and open plan living room bedroom. Guests staying in apartments can use all of the facilities at the hotel including room service. The apartments are available on both long and short term lets.

Strok's Restaurant is to the right of the main building of Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel and Spa. The main entrance to the restaurant that is also the guest breakfast venue, leads from the adjoining Martini Bar. The restaurant has large bay windows that directly overlook the River Thames and Windsor and Eton Bridge. French doors lead out to the riverside restaurant terrace area where guests can also dine, under large umbrellas with tables dressed in crisp white linen - subject to weather conditions. Adjoining the restaurant there is the circular Pavilion conservatory, which is mainly used for large functions and private hire. The A la carte menu changes for lunch and dinner and is seasonal, Typical dishes may include, Salad of Dandelion, wild Rocket and poached Prawns or Short Saddle of Lamb, Herb Farce, Broad Beans and Polenta. A traditional Sunday lunch is served with background music. On the first Sunday of each month there is also “a live jazz trio and free flowing 'Bubbly' served for the fixed menu price.”

The Martini Bar is a short distance from the Reception of the hotel at the entrance of Strok’s. During the winter months the bar serves cocktails, liquors and champagne either in the Martini Bar area or in the adjoining Drawing Room with large open fires. Traditional afternoon teas are also served here in winter, and on the terrace that is shared by Strok’s restaurant during the summer, a light menu and bar snacks are also available from the Champagne Terrace Bar.

The Sir Christopher Wren House Hotel and Spa has a number of versatile event spaces which are suitable for banquets, small conferences, lectures, business meetings, and weddings.

Princess Suite;
is located on the ground floor level of the main building and is easily accessible, natural light is available. The Princess Suite is decorated in a classical style, and opens onto the terrace, it is next to the Pavilion Foyer, Pavilion and the Music Room Bar, a private function bar. There are ladies', gents' and disabled facilities on the ground floor level. The Princess Suite is licensed for Civil weddings.

Pavilion;
is located on the ground floor of the main building and is easily accessible, natural light is available. Pavilion is a horse shoe shape conservatory that opens onto the terrace and can be adjoined to the Pavilion Foyer, Strok’s restaurant, the Music Room Bar and the Princess Suite. There are ladies', gents' and disabled facilities on the ground floor level. The Pavilion is licensed for Civil weddings.

Thames, Eton, Windsor and Partners;
are located in the Riverside Building and are accessible by a short flight of stairs, natural light is available. The four rooms are decorated in a classical style and Thames and Eton can be joined together to form an ‘L’ shape. Windsor has a more contemporary appearance. There are ladies' and gents' facilities in the same building on the basement/ground floor level.

Oak;
is located in the main building, and is on the ground floor, natural light is available. Oak is decorated in a classical style with original oak panels and large widows. There are ladies', gents' and disabled facilities on the ground floor level.

‘Business Centre’;
A recent addition to the hotel is a new state-of-the-art dedicated ‘Business Centre’ featuring 5 purpose built state-of-the-art conference rooms which can be configured in 7 different ways. This group of rooms are located the rear of the main part of the hotel, close to the spa. Each room benefits from natural light. The rooms in the ‘Business Centre’ each have built in audio visual equipment, concealed speakers, video conferencing facilities, light sensors and beverage counters. There are ladies, gents and disabled facilities in the same complex.

Towards the end of 2009 a new business and conference centre which is known as the ‘Business Centre’ was launched. This is a state-of –the-art facility with 5 event spaces which can be configured in 7 different ways. Each of these modern rooms have built-in plasma screens and audio equipment and video conferencing facilities. In the main building there is a small computer area in the Sienna Room which guests use for business! The Princess Suite, Pavilion, Pavilion Foyer and Music Room Bar which only opens for private functions, are all located on the ground floor level of the main building and can be hired separately or as a group, with the rooms/areas having a natural flow from one another. French doors lead from the Princess Suite, Pavilion and Pavilion Foyer to the terrace. The Princess Suite is classical in style and has many large paintings upon the walls and is an ideal venue for conferences, banquets, or weddings. Pavilion is a horse shoe shape conservatory, with a large domed skylight in the ceiling. Thames, Windsor, Eton and Partners are located the Riverside Building and with the exception of Windsor all overlook the River Thames. All four rooms have recently been redecorated, they have a bright yet classical style, with matching padded conference chairs and furniture. Thames and Eton can be joined together to form an ‘L’ shape with an additional tea and coffee breakout area. Oak, is situated in the main building, on the ground floor, it is suitable for small meetings or private dining, it has original oak panelling around the room and a large open fireplace. Motor Yacht Larus can be hired with Skipper for small private functions, cocktail parties, lunches or dinners. Leaving from the hotels own pontoon she cruises along the River Thames and is suitable for small groups of up to twelve people.

There are no special provisions for children at the Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel and Spa other than children’s menus and smaller portions. Babysitting is not available through the hotel, however guests are able to arrange this service themselves through local agents. The Champagne Terrace leading from Strok’s restaurant and bar and the Pavilion has direct access to the public tow path that runs along the banks of the River Thames so younger children will need supervision.

The first Sunday of each month Strok’s restaurant plays host to a live jazz band while “Traditional Sunday Lunch with free flowing Bubbly” is served. Bespoke private day boat cruises are available during the summer months for 12 guests aboard 'Larus’, along the River Thames from the hotels own pontoon. Locally there are various forms of entertainment including tours of Windsor Castle, Legoland and public River Thames boat trips. Seasonally there are polo matches on Smiths Lawn and during the racing season both Windsor Racecourse which can also be reached by boat, and Royal Ascot Racecourse are only a short drive away. The Theatre Royal on Thames Street has both matinees and evening productions with well known actors.

Wren’s Club is situated in the Gate House area of the hotel and has its own separate entrance on Thames Street and a side entrance via the hotel’s private car park. The gym is spread over three floors with a weights room, sauna, changing rooms and juice bar on the ground floor, cardiovascular running and bicycle machines on the 1st floor, and a studio with spinning bikes and mats on the 2nd floor. The gyms are light and well laid out, a personal trainer is on hand and available for longer chargeable training sessions. The juice bar serves complimentary coffees and cereals and fresh fruit juices are also available. Guests may also book chargeable massages at the spa which is in the same complex.

The club's true 27 hole course is made up of the three nine hole courses Colt, Alison and Jackson. The course was designed by Harry Shapland Colt who is arguably the greatest golf course architect in history. He and his partners have certainly had more influence on the game around the world than any other firm of architects. In l908 he was commissioned to create his first unassisted design at Stoke Poges.

Description
Wentworth has three courses. The West is world famous and is home each year to the HSBC World Matchplay and the BMW PGA Championship. The other "original" course is the East and finally the most recent addition is the Edinburgh which opened in the 1990’s. Many golfers visit Wentworth for the West course and very few courses can boast a tournament history on a par with the West course. It hosted the 1953 Ryder Cup and then in 1956 the Canada Cup, the forerunner to today’s World Cup of Golf. It has the distinction of hosting two of golf’s most prestigious championships; the World Matchplay and the PGA Championship. In addition the East course is in most golfers' lists of the top fifty courses in the British Isles. It was the setting for the inaugural Curtis Cup in 1932 and hosted a friendly match in 1926 between two teams from the US and Great Britain and Ireland which was the inspiration for the contest we now know as the Ryder Cup. Wren’s Club & Spa is located in the Gate House area of the hotel with its own separate entrance on Thames Street and a side entrance via the hotels car park. Situated in the same building as the gym, there are changing rooms on the ground floor and a separate staircase leading to the three treatment rooms. Each room has piped music and a colour scheme of deep purple and brown. Two of the treatment rooms have private showers. On the ground floor there is a relaxation room, sauna and juice bar. The Jacuzzi is currently under refurbishment. Treatments and products are by ESPA, a product range which includes cleansing, aromatherapy and hydrating formulations. Osteopathic treatments and a nutritional therapist are available. Spa packages, gift certificates and accommodation packages are also available.
Special Needs
Rooms & Bathrooms There is one specially adapted guest bedroom at the Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel and Spa, which is located on the ground floor of the Nook building. To access this room there are worn steps at the entrance of the building, the hotel will provide a temporary ramp and assistance for guests that may be challenged by this. There is an additional shallow permanent ramp with rails at the entrance of the guest room. The room itself has a slightly larger than standard entrance door and large bathroom, this has a bath and modern sink and a wheel-in wet room with shower. Lavatory, and additional small wash hand basin with faucets. There are 3 grab rails in the wet room area and an emergency pull cord that is connected to the Reception. The modern bedroom has a 6ft double bed, double closet and desk with chair and flashing audible alarm.
Restaurants & Catering Access to Strok’s restaurant, the Martini Bar and Drawing Room is on level access from the rear of the hotel. The Champagne Terrace which is used in the summer for alfresco dining and the terrace bar area has two steps leading down to it. A temporary ramp is available. The chairs and tables within these areas are all freestanding, the terrace however has uneven paving. The A la carte menu shows vegetarian options and mentions that they cannot guarantee that some items do not contain nuts. Gluten-free products and soya milk are offered at breakfast as standard. The hotel is proactive in learning about common allergies and sourcing specific foods and ingredients. Guests with special dietary requirements should notify staff well in advance. Some of the staff are trained in basic sign language and larger print menus are available if requested.
Visual & Hearing Aids The hotel has its own mobile Induction Loop system for the hard of hearing. Some staff have been trained in sign language, and 'Shake Awake' pillows are available for guests staying at the hotel. Guests who require extra visual assistance can ask for larger print menus and staff will talk through room layout etc using a 12 point clock face system. ‘Assistance Dogs’ are welcome.
Communal Areas With the exception of the meeting and conferencing rooms at the ‘Business Centre’, due to the age of the building some guests may find access to parts of the hotel challenging. The front entrance to the hotel has 3 worn and uneven steps with rails. Currently there is one permanent ramp in place to access the ground floor Reception of the main building from the hotel guest car park. From here there are no steps leading into Strok’s restaurant, the Martini Bar or the Drawing Room. Leading off from all these areas there are two steps down to the terrace and two steps up to the Pavilion conservatory. A temporary ramp is available that may overcome these problem for guests in wheelchairs. There is a specially adapted DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) cloakroom on the ground floor close to the main reception area, and also one in the 'Business Centre'.
Recreation Facilities The entrance to the hotel on Thames Street is pedestrianised and slightly uneven. The spa and gym has its own separate entrances either via the car park which has a ramp or from Thames Street which has uneven paving. The Reception for the spa and gym, the changing rooms, relaxation room, sauna and the weights gym are on ground floor level. The two remaining gyms and treatment rooms are above, on the 1st and 2nd floors and are reached by stairs.
Staff Assistance Staff are trained in first aid and can assist guests when necessary with access to public areas and guest rooms. Some members of staff are trained in sign language and will talk through room layout etc using a 12 point clock face system.

Due to the age and layout of the hotel, limited specially adapted facilities are available. The hotel has two permanent ramps at the rear of the hotel. One leads from the guest car park to the ground floor of the hotel, from here the DDA cloakroom and most public areas within the main building are accessible. The other leads towards the ‘Business Centre’ and Wren’s club & Spa. Additionally there is a temporary ramp for access to the Champagne Terrace area and the entrance to Nook where the adapted guest room is situated. Some of the key members of staff are trained in sign language and will assist guests with familiarisation of guest rooms using a 12 point clock system. There are no lifts in any of the guest room buildings with most buildings having 3 floors. Guests with dietary requirements should notify the hotel in advance so that specific ingredients can be sourced, gluten-free products and soya milk are available at breakfast. ‘Assistance Dogs’ are welcome.

The Sir Christopher Wren’s House Hotel and Spa is consciously looking at ways of improving environmental policies within the hotel. Presently bottles, glass, plastics, paper, cardboard and cooking oils are recycled. Energy saving light bulbs are slowly being implemented into the hotel and old light bulbs are being disposed of sensibly through the correct channels. The hotel staff meet regularly to discuss ways forward and staff are requested to turn off computers at night. The recently refurbished Nook rooms have energy saving key card switches, this will become standard in all future renovations to the guest rooms. Back of house cleaning materials are generally environmentally friendly and bathroom soaps are in large fixed pump action bottles to help reduce waste. The hotel supports and donates to The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, a leading youth development charity. To raise funds for this charity the staff run two half marathons a year, one in Windsor and one in Reading. An optional donation of £1.00 is also added to each bill in Strok’s Restaurant.
