The all-suite Wyndham Grand London Chelsea Harbour is situated just off the fashionable Kings Road in Chelsea and occupies an enviable position on the River Thames with views over a small marina (Chelsea Harbour), the River Thames and the City of London. The hotel was purpose built in 1989 as London’s only all-suite hotel. All of the 154 contemporary suites are only accessible by a security lift key. The suites are spacious with a two-room layout and are tastefully furnished in tones of gold and burgundy. The six Penthouse suites on the eighth floor are classically styled. Guests can enjoy many in-room facilities and small dogs are welcome to stay for a nominal charge. The modern Aquasia Restaurant, Terrace and Bar on the lobby level overlooks the tranquillity of the marina and serves predominantly English and European dishes. The hotel has a health and fitness centre and an indoor swimming pool. Additionally a florist, hairdressers and barbers are located at the lobby entrance. There are 14 versatile conference and banqueting rooms located mainly on the Marina and lower floor levels which are equipped with audio-visual and technical facilities.

The Wyndham Grand London Chelsea Harbour is located near the famous Kings Road in the residential district between Lots Road, home of many antique auction houses, and the River Thames. Within a short stroll of the hotel along the banks of the River Thames is the recent development of Imperial Wharf where there are a number of restaurants and a small upmarket supermarket. Battersea Park on the southern side of the river is approximately 15 minutes walk away. The hotel is outside the London Congestion Charging Zone. The closest Underground Stations are Fulham Broadway and Earls Court. There is a taxi pool at the hotel and guests may also make use of the complimentary chauffeur service to Knightsbridge and Oxford Street

Layout Description

The approach to the Wyndham Grand London Chelsea Harbour is from Lots Road which is famous for its many auction houses. The areas immediately surrounding the hotel are fairly recently developed upmarket apartment buildings and town houses. The hotel has a sweeping driveway with space for pick-up and drop-down only. On entering the hotel there is a large lobby area with seating. To the right there are stairs to the Marina and lower level and three lifts which access all the floors of the hotel. The reception desk with three separate stations is also to the right and to the left is the concierge desk. Leading off from the left there is a small florist which also sells essential overnight items and small gifts and toys, a hairdressers and separate barbers. There is also a discreet disabled ramp which avoids the four steps that lead to Aquasia Restaurant, Terrace and Bar and the Drakes Banqueting suite. The remaining conference and banqueting suites are located below the lobby on the Marina level and the lower level. The health and fitness centre and indoor pool are also located on the lower level and are reached by a separate designated lift from guest floors only.

Cranley Comment

The large lobby area is decorated in calming shades of cream and gold with marble flooring. Large porthole style windows feature throughout the lobby level area in keeping with the backdrop of the harbour and its nautical location. Just beyond the lobby area are a florist, hairdressers and barbers. The décor of the Aquasia Restaurant and Bar is contemporary in shades of purple and green with wooden flooring and large full height and length windows overlooking the marina and the Aquasia Terrace.

Within the Wyndham Grand London Chelsea there is a florist, Chelsea Flowers, which also stocks personal essentials and over the counter medication. It is open from 10:00 to 18:00 six days a week, excluding Sundays. Figaro, the ladies hairdressers and separate barbers also located on the Lobby Level is open from 09:00 to 18:30 six days a week, excluding Sundays. On the approaching road to the hotel, Lots Road, there are a number of famous antique auction houses.

Chelsea Flowers, an independent shop located off the lobby, supplies the hotel with all its floral arrangements. Guests may also send or purchase flowers from here. Chelsea Flowers also stocks a small selection of personal essential items, over the counter medications and a selection of London maps, greetings cards, children’s toys and Chelsea football club memorabilia. Figaro, a hairdressers with separate barbers also has premises within the hotel. Figaro is open to guests and is also popular with local residents and manicures, pedicures and gentleman’s wet shaves are available too. Within a short walk there is a selection of local restaurants, pubs and an upmarket supermarket located at Imperial Wharf.

The 94 standard Chelsea Suites are located on floors one to seven and have views of Lots Road and the surrounding area of mainly luxury residential apartments and townhouses. Each suite has an entrance hall with marble flooring, many with a guest cloakroom leading from the entrance hall. The contemporary living rooms have a comfortable sofa and two chairs, a workstation with black granite top and generally a large dark wood and granite cabinet which houses a mini bar, tea and filter coffee making facilities and a large laptop safe. The dark wood television cabinet also has a DVD and CD player. Both the living area and the twin and king-size bedrooms leading off are decorated with plain heavy fabrics in tones of gold, dusky red, sea green and marine blue. The bed linen is 100% cotton with oversized feather pillows and each bedroom has an additional flat screen television, radio alarm clock and dressing area. The large bathrooms have floor-to-ceiling grey tiles a large mirror, twin basins, separate programmable rain shower and luxury Temple Spa toiletries. The bidet and toilet are separate.

There are 40 standard Marina Suites on the lower floors of the hotel that are decorated and configured in the same manner as the Chelsea Suites but with all having a guest cloakroom. All of the Marina Suites have balconies leading off from the living area with a small table and two chairs overlooking the small marina and the surrounding cobbled promenade and residential buildings.

The two Diplomatic Suites on the eighth floor have two separate entrances, one leading to the bedroom and the other leading to the hall and living room. Leading off from the hall there is a guest cloakroom. The traditionally decorated suites have dark wood furniture and double opening doors. The two Presidential Suites are located on the eighth floor at each end of the hotel. The suites have a large hall with a guest cloakroom leading off to one side. The Presidential Suites are the largest of the suites on the penthouse floor and are traditionally decorated with dark wood furniture and double opening doors and the curtains and soft furnishings are in regal tones of light blue and light gold. There is a large comfortable living room with two sofas and chairs, workspace, television cabinet and glass cabinet. Sliding doors lead to the balcony which has a table and four chairs and views along the River Thames. There are two double doors leading to the adjoining dining room which has its own separate entrance and an interconnecting door to the Diplomatic Suite The dining room has a dining table with eight chairs and a desk and there is a small separate galley kitchen. Aquasia Restaurant located at the far end of the lobby area enjoys views overlooking the terrace and harbour. Disabled access is via a short discreet ramp. The uncluttered décor is arranged over two levels and there are two large aquatic features of moving water at the entrance of the restaurant. In the evenings Aquasia Restaurant serves a mixture of modern English favourites and Mediterranean cuisine from its seasonal a la carte menu. Aquasia is also open for breakfast and buffet lunch and on Saturdays a brunch is served. During the evening live jazz or piano music can be heard from the adjoining bar. Children are well catered for and are given colouring packs. Well behaved small dogs staying at the hotel are allowed in the restaurant.

Aquasia Terrace adjoins both the restaurant and the bar and is open all year round. It enjoys the tranquillity of the Marina at its waters edge and the surrounding square. There are a number of tables for alfresco dining and two large circular tables for more informal meals or drinks. Aquasia Bar overlooking the harbour has a contemporary décor of purple and green with a mix of hardwood and marble floors. There are a number of high backed chairs and tables, seating areas with low level tables and guests may also sit directly at the mirrored bar. There is a baby grand piano in one corner of the bar area and live musicians entertain guests most evening. Throughout the day and evening Aquasia Bar serves teas, coffees and alcoholic beverages. The bar meals and snacks menu is classic English with Asian influences. On Thursday evenings, sundowners are served at half price from 18:00 to 20:00. Complimentary newspapers are available daily.

The concierge has available docking stations and games which are both educational and fun. The restaurant has a small children’s menu and the chef is happy to provide smaller portions from the a la carte menu and bar menu. High chairs are available. On selected dates throughout the year, children’s activities including cookie baking are organised free of charge. Requests for babysitting, cots and roll out beds should be made through housekeeping. Within five minutes walk there is a “Gambado” centre which offers indoor ball ponds, climbing frames, toddler gyms etc for children up to ten years old. Description

Brocket Hall Golf Club is part of the splendid 543 acre Brocket Hall Estate and was designed from the first to offer some of the best golf in the United Kingdom. The two Championship standard courses, the Melbourne and the Palmerston, are each named after the 19th Century Prime Ministers to whom Brocket Hall was home. Both courses are set within the contours of the Estate and provide a challenging and varied game for golfers of all abilities.

The Par 72 Melbourne Course designed by Peter Allis is set in the picturesque parkland surrounding the Hall and provides a rigorous and challenging test of golf. In contrast, the par 73 Palmerston Course designed by Donald Steel is over 7,000 yards from the back tees. Donald has sculptured many beautiful holes playing through the ancient woodlands with some very undulating fairways.

Stoke Park

Description

As well as being a challenging and demanding course you will find it hard not to be stirred by the exquisite views and landscapes of the Club's championship course known as Stoke Poges. The club's true 27 hole course is made up of the three nine hole courses Colt, Alison and Jackson. The course was designed by Harry Shapland Colt who is arguably the greatest golf course architect in history. He and his partners have certainly had more influence on the game around the world than any other firm of architects. In l908 he was commissioned to create his first unassisted design at Stoke Poges.

The Grove

Description

The Grove golf course in Hertfordshire, is widely regarded as one of the finest new golf courses in Europe and recently hosted the World Golf Championships, American Express Championship 2007. 'The Grove is a 7,152 yard par 72 championship golf course, located just outside London, designed by the distinguished American architect Kyle Philips and is playable all year round. Built to USGA specification, with the latest A4 creeping bent grass for firm, fast putting surfaces. Following the slopes, ridges and mounds of the natural landscape the course also includes a continuous hidden cart path around all 18 holes, full length driving range, practice area and putting green. Visitors should note that metal spikes are not allowed.

Wentworth

Description

Wentworth has three courses. The West is world famous and is home each year to the HSBC World Matchplay and the BMW PGA Championship. The other "original" course is the East and finally the most recent addition is the Edinburgh which opened in the 1990’s. Many golfers visit Wentworth for the West course and very few courses can boast a tournament history on a par with the West course. It hosted the 1953 Ryder Cup and then in 1956 the Canada Cup, the forerunner to today’s World Cup of Golf. It has the distinction of hosting two of golf’s most prestigious championships; the World Matchplay and the PGA Championship. In addition the East course is in most golfers' lists of the top fifty courses in the British Isles. It was the setting for the inaugural Curtis Cup in 1932 and hosted a friendly match in 1926 between two teams from the US and Great Britain and Ireland which was the inspiration for the contest we now know as the Ryder Cup. Lastly the Edinburgh course was opened in more recent times and was designed by coach and former Ryder Cup player and captain John Jacobs in consultation with nine-time major champion Gary Player and the Club’s then professional Bernard Gallacher.

Communal Areas

The large lobby area, florist and hairdressing salons are accessible for wheelchair users and there is a discreet ramp that avoids the four steps to the restaurant, bar, terrace and the disabled lavatories. The hotel has its own wheelchair and will provide assistance where required. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the hotel.

Rooms & Bathrooms

There are two DDA compliant (Disability Discrimination Act) Chelsea Suites. Neither have interconnecting rooms. The bathrooms are very large with many grab rails and a panic alarm that is connected to the reception. The separate shower has a small, three centimetre lip at the opening, and a folding shower seat. The shower should be able to accommodate most wheelchairs. There is a flashing fire alarm between the living area and the bedroom.

Restaurants & Catering

Wheelchair users can access the restaurant, bar and terrace via a gentle discreet ramp. The restaurant is split level with the majority of the tables away from the windows being up one small step. The disabled lavatories located next to the bar have a number of grab rails and a panic alarm that is connected to the reception.

The Marina area and its surrounding public promenade are cobbled.

All public areas within the hotel are accessible to wheelchair users. The hotel has its own wheelchair and assistance can be provided when needed.
