Cranley Summary
The Sanderson Hotel is located in London's West End district in the heart of Soho. There are theatres, restaurants and the famous shopping areas of Oxford Street and Regent Street which are a five minute walking distance from the hotel. The urban spa hotel is a landmark property with a landscaped interior courtyard garden that is open to the sky and surrounded by guestrooms. The iconic indoor/outdoor lobby, with the absence of "normal" walls, has a floor-to-ceiling glass facade that diffuses natural light through flowing layers of opera style curtains. The lobby is a mixture of baroque and modern styles and sets the tone of the hotel. The one hundred and fifty guestrooms and suites represent a total transformation of the conventional hotel room. The hotel’s iconic indoor/outdoor lobby with the absence of “normal” walls, has a floor-to-ceiling glass façade that diffuses natural light through flowing layers of 18th century style opera curtains. The foyer represents a completely new approach to hotel public space and sets a tone of baroque and modern styles with Venetian chandeliers, Louis XV style bureaus, hand made mirrors, "lip" sofas and "tongue" chairs. The front desk, which is to the far left on entering the hotel foyer, is designed with video art installations along the front and a large armoire strategically placed behind the desk. Turning right at the hotel’s lobby entrance leads through to the “see and be seen” Long Bar with its silver leaf high chairs surrounding an eighty foot onyx bar. Beyond, is the newly opened Suka Malaysian style restaurant. The Long Bar and Suka restaurant's outside terraces surround a Japanese style courtyard garden that stands in the centre of the hotel. Quieter public areas off the lobby include the Purple Bar and the Billiard room. There is a small exclusive gift boutique located near the reception desk. The two elevators located next to the Billiard Room serve all floors. The elevator doors are framed with etched hand made mirrors and interiors that are decorated with outer space scenes.

Cranley Comment
The Sanderson Hotel has a wide range of superior accommodation with one hundred and fifty guestrooms and suites, some with private gardens. The rooms are unique and groundbreaking, representing a total transformation of the conventional hotel room. Designed without solid interior walls, the rooms have been opened to create a loft-like plan. The only dividing walls are glass, all see through except for the etched partitions shared by the shower and toilet. Guests are invited to design their own personal space and their own levels of privacy by using or not using the electronically operated layers of sheer white and opaque pink silk drapes that open or close off the space. The rooms feature silver-leafed sleigh beds, are decorated in pale yellow, cream and silvers and have custom-designed furniture and accessories. An unusual feature of the rooms is the soothing landscape scenes that are hung on the ceiling. Each guestroom is fully equipped with the latest up-to-date amenities. Standard rooms are approached along carpeted corridors all lit by floor lights, similar to walking down the aisle of a plane. The room numbers are displayed on the floor by the entrance area and lit by a light. All the rooms represent a total transformation of the conventional hotel room. With the removal of inner walls, the rooms have been opened to create a loft-like plan. The bedrooms have maple wood floors and are all decorated in white. The transparent glass bathroom allows for no separation between the room and the dressing room/bathroom. There are electronically operated layers of sheer white and opaque pink silk drapes that open or close off the space. Standard rooms have queen-size beds and shining polished chrome night tables. Attached to the back of the bed is a pure-white desk that is paired with a white mesh office desk chair. In one corner of the room stands a small contoured-back chair. Suka meaning "enjoy" in Malaysian, opened its doors in March 2007. The restaurant's dramatic setting encompasses the "hidden" space following the Long Bar as well as the Garden Terrace. Suka has a relaxed and casual ambiance whilst still capturing the elegance of the Sanderson. The restaurant’s central area focuses on a typical Asian sharing style and features long bench like tables surrounded with high bar chairs to one side. The tables follow through to become lower tables on the raised open kitchen area. Further tables surround the central area and doors lead out to the restaurant’s covered terrace area which is set in a Japanese style garden. Suka serves modern authentic Malaysian cuisine. This is combined with western influences and French cooking techniques capturing the intensity of south east Asian flavours. Suka offers an a la carte menu which includes a variety of Malaysian Tapas, a set lunchtime menu and is the hotel’s breakfast venue serving buffet and a la carte.

The Long Bar is located on the lobby level following through from the reception area. In a setting that is light and white giving a feeling of freshness and cleanliness, the spacious airy bar takes on a theatrical tone. There are several high bar tables with stools at the entrance of the Long Bar. The focal point of the bar is the eighty foot long rectangular onyx long bar that glows with incorporated light. The tabletop overhang is made of matte stainless steel. The tall bar stools have silver-leaf frames with white upholstered backs which feature an inset image of a woman's eye. Classic and innovative cocktails fill the seasonally changing menu, with guests also being able to enjoy the ultimate burger with a selection of varying garnishes, charcuterie and mezze sharing plates. The Purple Bar, with its decor of purples, lavenders and violets, is an intimate lounge that is the perfect setting for drinks and quiet conversation. The bar features illuminated Venetian etched-glass tables paired with small, custom-made African stools with stainless steel backs, and purple Queen Anne chairs creating a quirky, almost jewellery box effect. The custom bar top is fashioned entirely from a massive piece of raw, uncut black Nero Apsoluto stone. The floor is made of the same black granite. The entry to the bar is framed by a lavender Venetian etched mirror and violet silk opera drapes cover the walls and ceiling creating a theatrical setting. Purple Bar offers 10oz martinis as well as a selection of 3oz classic martinis, all of which are based on the original martini "The Martinez" dating back to 1860.

Description
Wentworth has three courses. The West is world famous and is home each year to the HSBC World Matchplay and the BMW PGA Championship. The other "original" course is the East and finally the most recent addition is the Edinburgh which opened in the 1990’s. Many golfers visit Wentworth for the West course and very few courses can boast a tournament history on a par with the West course. It hosted the 1953 Ryder Cup and then in 1956 the Canada Cup, the forerunner to today’s World Cup of Golf. It has the distinction of hosting two of golf’s most prestigious championships; the World Matchplay and the PGA Championship. In addition the East course is in most golfers' lists of the top fifty courses in the British Isles. It was the setting for the inaugural Curtis Cup in 1932 and hosted a friendly match in 1926 between two teams from the US and Great Britain and Ireland which was the inspiration for the contest we now know as the Ryder Cup. Lastly the Edinburgh course was opened in more recent times and was designed by coach and former Ryder Cup player and captain John Jacobs in consultation with nine-time major champion Gary Player and the Club’s then professional Bernard Gallacher.
