Damask is the Athenaeum Hotels A la carte restaurant that is located to the right of the lobby next to the study area and Whisky Room. During the course of the day the restaurant and ambiance transforms from a light bright breakfast area with continental breakfast served form the adaptable entrance larder area, an A la carte menu is served at the tables that are laid with fine bone china. For lunch both the A la carte menu and a prix fix menu is served that includes a wide buffet selection of cocktail style canapés with cold meats and fish followed by the A la carte daily special which is influenced by British cuisine. The central high backed curved ‘Love Seats’ create enough privacy for small private meetings or are ideal for guests dining on their own, with larger seating arrangements around the room. At the rear of the room there is a large circular table that is surrounded by a wall of 'London Pearly King Buttons'. In the evenings, the entrance area to the Damask is transformed once again and turns into a well stocked cocktail bar where a large amount of the hotels 250 whiskies are on display. In keeping with all the public areas at the Athenaeum Hotel privacy without any uniformity is important. The Whisky Room is no exception to this rule. Situated to the right of the lobby next to the study and Damask Restaurant, the small Whisky Room has informal seating arrangements around the room with a high backed double sided chair in the middle of the room. Some of the hotel's 250 to 280 whiskies are on display along one wall. There is no formal bar as this is replaced by attentive discreet staff who take orders personally. A selection of wines, cocktails, champagnes and a small nibbles and snacks menu are also served. Regulars to the Whisky Room keep a 'Passport Log' of all the whiskies that they have tried, “not in one sitting!” and during the high season the hotel also holds 'Whisky Pairing Evenings' which are popular with connoisseurs and guests.

There is a small spa located in the basement level of the Athenaeum Hotel for use of both hotel and apartment guests. The spa area has a reception and one treatment room that have recently been refurbished with brown silk walls and mood lighting. Guests can have a number of treatments and additionally there is a hairdressers and a small gym within the same area. The wet area of the gym includes a large rectangular Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, a large open double rain shower and a small seating relaxation area that is all enclosed by a permanent frosted glass wall looking out to the spa reception area and entrance to the gym.
Special Needs
Communal Areas
At the entrance to the hotel there are 3 steps down to the lobby from street level which has a temporary ramp. Access to the food and beverage outlets are on one level but only the gentlemen’s cloakroom facilities which are not specially adapted are on this level, the ladies' cloakroom is reached by lift and then by two steps. Both the gym, hairdressers, and spa area are all located in the basement with the conference facilities on the first floor also being reached by lift.
Rooms & Bathrooms
There are two DDA (Disabled Discrimination Act) guest rooms in the main hotel for either disabled travellers or guests with special needs. In the bedroom there is an emergency assistance cord by the bed, one lowered clothes rail inside the wardrobe which is accessible by wheelchair users, low light switches throughout, and a low eye spy on the front door. In the bathroom, there are disable handles on both sides of toilet, on the bathroom door and on both sides of the shower chair. The shower has a movable head and there is a low level sink. There is an adjustable padded backrest on the back of the toilet seat and emergency assistance cord by the toilet.

The hotel's apartments are well laid out but the entry to them is up 2 stairs and the lifts are very small here. These lifts however do have braille. Some of the small kitchens within the apartments are more open plan than others. Disabled facilities and equipment currently offered to guests with special needs who are staying in the apartments are; ramp at entrance to building, bath chair, toilet seat and mobile shower.
Restaurants & Catering
All the food and beverage outlets are on one level at the Athenaeum Hotel and lead off the lobby area which is accessed from the street by three steps down or a temporary ramp. There are a large number of solid bench ‘love seats’ within the Damask Restaurant, with a few tables having one or two additional freestanding chairs. The Garden Room has freestanding large settees and occasional chairs with low level coffee tables along each side of the room and a wide central area with plenty of natural light to one side. The Chef at the Athenaeum Hotel is extremely adaptable, and is able to accommodate particular dietary requirements with many regular guests also requesting favourites from past menus.
Recreation Facilities
There is a small gym situated in the basement level of the hotel that is tightly packed with the latest equipment. The pool and wet spa area has a large Jacuzzi small sauna and steam room.
Visual & Hearing Aids
There are no induction loop facilities or other special visual or hearing aids in the Athenaeum Hotel at present. Menus can be enlarged for the partially sighted. The lifts in the apartment mansion houses have braille but not in the hotel. Assistance dogs are welcome in public areas and the guest rooms and apartments.
Staff Assistance
The staff at the Athenaeum Hotel and Apartments are acutely aware of the lack of facilities for travellers with special needs and are happy to provide assistance where ever possible. Staff are trained in first aid with a few having special assistance training. The hotel has its own wheelchair for use when necessary.

Cranley Comment
Improvements on environmental policies within the Athenaeum Hotel and Apartments are currently under review and the aim is to include more energy saving devices in guest rooms in the current refurbishment plan. Some steps have already been addressed by recycling, bottles, plastics, cans and cooking oils. There are energy saving sensor switches in guest rooms and suites in the main hotel and while laundry collection bags are still plastic, cleaned clothes are returned in wicker re usable baskets when possible. The hotel supports a number of charities throughout the year.
